Hi, Let’s start from the end. DI tracks from Dan James Gear used: Laboga The Beast Amp, Mesa Rectifier 2×12 V30 Cab, Razor Boost, single AT 4040 mic.  Let’s compare how   they sound in the mix: a real guitar amp, Kemper direct amp profile on real cab and Merged Profile also on Real cab.

Well, Yes! In the mix almost the same but… We often hear something like this: “spot on”, “better than Real”, “The same”. In my opinion, this is not true why? Hmmm.. Let’s hear how sounds one guitar track:

QUADTRACKED MERGED PROFILE [REAL CAB]

As you can hear, Real amp (not only that one) has own character. The beast something like fuzz/fizzy sound and specific voicing. With Kemper these nuances disappear. That’s why for me all Kemper Amps profiles sounds good but very close (yes, also real higain amps sounds very close with boost like TS even closer but it’s not the point). The point is, that kemper profile don’t sounds 100% the same what real amp. Many Kemper Users says: “better”, more “mix friendly”. Well, for Me Real amp (even sounds like shit its always starting point – haha sorry 😀 ). And yes profiles sounds different, even of the same amp but why? It’s simple all hard work doing a cabinets, speakers ,mic and mic position. Brutal True!

What Next? Let’s compare direct amp profile with real cab and merged profile on real cab. But first studio profile vs merged profile recorded directly in DAW.

MERGED PROFILE

Yessss, almost the same (ok, the same) but now Direct Amp profile on Real cab vs Merged profile (direct amp part) also on Real Cab.

DIRECT AMP PROFILE ON REAL CAB

MERGED ON REAL CAB

Hmmm, For Me direct amp profile sounds brighter compared to merged on real cab and at the same time sounds closer to Real Amp Yes? Of course, we not marginalize the benefits of using merged profiles but … Remember, starting point for me is the sound of a Real amplifier.

At the end Let’s compare studio profile with cabinet block off and direct amp profile both with real miced cab.

STUDIO PROFILE CAB OFF ON REAL CAB

DIRECT AMP PROFILE ON REAL CAB

Well, again Yes the studio is darker than direct amp, at the same time Direct Amp sounds closer to Real Amp but really? Do you hear any other differences? in the overdrive structure or something else?

At the end almost all sounds the same but not the same 😀

Stay Metal!
